DIAS

Mature is a boring word. Most of the time it means you’re not willing to take any risk and think too much. But letting your music sound mature when you are a young man, the word suddenly becomes super cool. The 20-year-old Ifang Bremer from Nijmegen surprised us when he sent us his track Dias. Dias contains a deep & warm beat, a fat synth in the break, while the poem of Fernando Pessoa finds his way through the beat. We were eager to hear more, so Ifang sent more. What you’re about to hear is something electronic inspired by disco, new wave, Southern Europe and cinematic composition. We love it.

INSPIRATION

JENNA THIAM

French actress Jenna Thiam appears in the 2013 TV-series Les Revenants: a gorgeously subtle, sinister drama that covers the story of loved ones returning from their graves – not as the typical zombie – but seemingly exactly how they were alive. Struck by Thiam’s beauty I made the song Jenna that will appear on this release. I never really intended to make a song about her, but I guess her stunning appearance accompanied by the captivating soundtrack by Scottish post-rock band Mogwai got my inspiration going.

BARCELONA ARTISTS

In the summer of 2014 I got lost in a massive crowd during the Festa De Gràcia in Barcelona. My phone was dead, my friends were gone and I had no clue where I was. At one point I just surrendered to the situation and allowed myself to stop thinking for a brief moment. All I sensed was the sweltering, hairdryer-like heat, the cheerful people and the colourful streets around me. This intense experience combined with listening to Barcelona scene artists such as Pional and John Talabot influenced this release a lot.

SERIES OF OUR TIME

I think that TV series and videogames are the masterworks of our time. They inspire me a lot in making music as well. I watch a lot of TV-series, sometimes I feel like I should spend more time making music and less time on Netflix. The difference between a movie and a 6 season series to me is the depth of the characters and the storyline(s). I love it when the cinematography, the soundtrack and the story together make a unique atmosphere and leave me in awestruck.

80’S NEW WAVE

The melancholic feel of 80’s new wave never seems to get old to me. In my music I’m always in search of a sense of nostalgia. I find that in bands such as Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Depeche Mode and The Cure. It’s a weird thing though… This music does not simply feel nostalgic because it’s old; after all I wasn’t even born in the 80’s. I guess this feel of sentimentality just runs through the veins of this musical era.

THE LADY & THE DRAGON

We discovered the music of RQUE about 1 year ago. In that period he told us he was working on an album which was about his personal and spiritual change.

A few months ago he sent us the whole album and we immediately fell in love with it. The album covers versatility of musical influences such as indigenous shamanic sounds, trip-hop beats, and warm guitars. In addition, the album was recorded in an important phase in the young life of RQUEº. The strength of the production process can be traced back to the feeling around personal issues that he translates in this record, like overcoming your fears and put aside and let go of your ego.

In the end, RQUE doesn’t use too many words for it. He believes that you can feel his message through his music.

INTERVIEW

INSPIRATION

JIDDU KRISHNAMURTI

Jiddu Krishnamurti explained me what fear is. He is very clear in his teachings on what it is and how to best handle it in life. I try to implement these teachings in the lyrics of my album. I’m expressing that fear is just an illusion you create for yourself. In the album there is also the contradicting story of understanding fear, being at a point that you don’t understand it anymore and eventually that you do. This is a story you have to make yourself, but then again it’s my intent to move the listener to wander of in thought.

RUSSELL BRAND

This guy is just crazy! He doesn’t care what other people think and just says it like it is. He represents the rebel within me. He gives me the confidence to also not care and not be afraid to do what I want, like making this album. He absolutely inspires me to do what I must do and to follow my dreams.

I think that’s the problem nowadays. People often don’t do what they want, but do things because they think they have to. They don’t have the confidence, only want to play it safe and therefore don’t live up to their full potential. And yes… That’s the trap. Brand tells us that we can be whoever we want to be. Besides that, he is super direct and in your face, has a big mouth and has awesome rhetoric.

GEORGE LUCAS

This guy has everything. The music. The art. The narrative. The wisdom. He has it all. Everything he makes feels like one big adventure. I am a storyteller as such myself actually. Lucas inspires me to tell these big stories within my own compositions. And he is just one of the best at that.

Also, because he records his sounds from real life objects and whatever he can get his hands on, he creates this beautiful, organic atmosphere. This is the reason why his sounds appear super futuristic and at the same time still sound familiar. I really love that quality in music. You can mess around with it but it’s essence and soul will still be there.

When he has an idea in his head he works in such a way that the music picks it up and takes it to a whole other level. Besides, I always feel like going on an adventure after I’ve seen his work!

BONOBO

British musician Simon Green, also known as Bonobo, inspires me to give my music a natural and acoustic feel. He, of course, also is a great storyteller. Every new album he releases has these three elements but also is a different chapter in his music career and has a very distinct feel to it. ‘Days to Come’ for instance, is very jazzy, while his latest album is oriented towards house and becomes very electronic. And although he represents a wide variety of genres, he managed to keep his own identity and sound. I think that’s genius. He doesn’t stick to a particular genre but instead puts his gut feeling to work. Cool stuff always comes from that. It’s exactly what I do.

BRIGHTLY DARK

Accessible yet intelligent, Hugo Oak is an up in the clouds and deep underground musician. By using and combining intense sounds, he seeks to compose both downtempo and uplifting tracks that will, in either case, make your blood flow a little harder.

INSPIRATION

HERBIE HANCOCK

I discovered Herbie Hancock at a very young age. I have to admit, that I have somewhat of a strange relationship to Hancock. For instance: I bought a book about him once, didn’t read it because I lacked the focus, but he still very much intrigues me. I keep putting on his records, even though I don’t fully understand the story he wants to tell. That captivates me.

Like the beginning of Chameleon, his sound can be very electronic but it’s mostly acoustic. He makes music that’s almost physically present, that you can almost touch. When you close your eyes it’s as if you’re actually there, which I think is awesome. Besides all of this, he just makes extremely exquisite music.

The journey he made as an artist is also really interesting. He started out as a wild young rebel on stage and with the coming of age he explored different styles of music and became more placid in the way he plays. I imagine myself going on such a journey in my career. The diversity in styles is something you can hear in my music: an exquisite mix of electronic and acoustic sounds.

SALVADOR DALÍ

Dalí to me is most memorable for his clocks. I am particularly keen on that work for it’s such a simple everyday object and he is able to create so much exciting work from it. That’s very similar to how the process of making music works. You’re never finished with a track. There are always new ideas and variations that you can add to your production, even though the final product most of the time is just one track. It’s a cool idea that you can make like 40 tracks from one song, each being a variation on the original theme. Sort of like making 40 remixes. I’m not sure how interesting that would be, but Dalí’s work shows that it can be interesting and that the possibilities are endless.

For instance, when I started singing I found a copy of the lyrics from the Lionel Richie song Hello. I started playing on the piano and just sang the words not knowing how the original song actually sounded. That gave me the freedom to change the whole song around and play a reggae version, or a rock version or turn it into the ballad it is. Even now I occasionally sing the song but with different chords. By doing so, you can really train and get to know your voice. Just like I think Dalí became a better artist by varying on one theme.

RAY CHARLES

The best piano player I know. He seems to be hitting every single note with his soul. The same goes for his voice, it flows perfectly through the music. When I listen to his music, I mostly don’t even focus on the lyrics. And I think that’s what makes him so genius. You can hear his voice and instruments alone, that he likes to drink and smoke and that he has been living a heavy life. His voice is so pure that I consider him as one of the greatest singers ever.

Ray also introduced me to one of my favourite instruments: the Fender Rhodes. It has an amazing sound and feel to it. In the past, I’ve been saving some money to buy one, but in the end decided to buy a synth. Nevertheless, the Rhodes adds extraordinary colour to the sound and inspires me to do the same with my own productions. I find it hard to explain, but it just makes me feel really good. Listening to Ray Charles helps me with producing music. I listen to his music before I begin and it always gets me in the right state of mind

It’s a dream to be as good as him one day, but that requires a lot more practice and experience from my side. And I wouldn’t be too fond being blind either.

PRINCE

Again, my inspiration comes from a totally crackbrained artist. It’s also what links all my inspirations together. I admire the crazy ones that do things differently and don’t care about the status quo. They are the ones that push things in a new direction and they push me to go beyond my limitations and be a better artist. They show me that making music doesn’t abide by any rules; they’re only there to break.

One of which is Prince. His influence actually boils down to one scene from Purple Rain. It’s the scene where his ex-girlfriend comes to see his show with her new boyfriend after they broke up. He then directs his performance completely to her and, not so subtle, lets her know what he thinks of her. It starts with a filthy beat, which only he can make and is a highlight on itself. When he starts singing it only get worse. The lyrics are so nasty: “I met her in a hotel lobby masturbating with a magazine”. He’s got the performance to match and he really stabs the song and the words right into her heart. It’s so well performed that it almost feels like he’s assaulting her.

He breaks with conventions and doesn’t care about what anyone thinks of what he does. Being able to convey so much emotion and being able to direct it to only one person in the audience in such an unbound way is just crazy! I would really love to be able to do that some day.
